Kissing hands when arriving or saying goodbye (salim)

  • Kissing hands is usually done when one arrives from a place or when leaving a place.
  • When wanting to leave or leaving a location, one should say goodbye to their elders. This is done out of respect for the person living in the house and to let the host know that you are not at home. If staying in a house, one can say goodbye to the mother, father, or an elder or respected person.
  • When kissing hands, one bows one's head, then pulls the other person's right hand to kiss.
  • Kissing hands to say goodbye has many variations. First, one can kiss the back of the other person's right hand.
  • Secondly, one can touch their forehead or cheek with the back of the other person's hand. After that, they can say "goodbye"; "go first"' or "Assalamualaikum" (if of the Islamic variety).
  • - Leaving the house without informing the host or without saying goodbye is considered rude and confusing to the host.
